thank you fly nice post Im courious with your special editions, do you know the 3 cd set of clara schumann piano works performed by Jozef de Beenhouwer ? well the first 2 cd set are awesome but the cd 3 sound like a mono recorded with very horrible sound, i want to know if its possible improve the sound of this Cd number 3. just listen some samples
Claudio: About Clara Schumann cd... It's a very difficult task :) It's a false stereo (mono duplicate in both channels). What's contained in the left channel is exactly equal to that which is contained in the right channel. Actually the files are in pure mono and there is almost nothing to do...except for editing, using filters and equalizers...
Isn't it strange that the Clara Schumann disc is in double mono? After all, it's a CPO disc from the 90's.
Do you know why this is the case with this disc?
Anyway, it's easy to "stereoize" the disc, using frequency distribution; but it's useless. Several major labels have done this when "STEREO" was as commercial a word as "DIGITAL" still is (strangely enough) but the end result sounds much worse, I think, than the original mono recordings. Mono can sound very good, actually. Good mono sounds better than poor stereo at the "same" sound quality.
Hi Fly, Please don't take this comment as a criticism, just as a suggestion... If all of the latest CD's posted, need to be calibrated stereo, not your system that is in need of some adjustment? Each engineer uses a technique, and apparently you're equating your personal taste. Isn't it better that each used an software for custom settings, and CD's were posted with the maximum resolution? I have compared some calibration and I think that worsens the sound! Everyone seems too focused and committed to the stage. hugs, Bob

Maybe I need to go to an otolaryngologist (seriously) or have a long vacation...
I don't know if the cds posted here are better than the originals. I could only compare one cd - French Suites of Andrei Gavrilov - and the special edition has a better sound. Why do people make nasty comments? If you don't like, buy the original cd or try another blog. Thank you, Fly.
I agree, we are all visiting here because of your tastes in music too Fly.....those that dont like it can not bother visiting.... Take Care Sungirl....
hello fly about clara schumann do you have this set performed by Susanne Grutzmann http://www.amazon.com/Schumann-C-Piano-Works/dp/B003HFIHYQ/ref=tmm_msc_title_0
I too find the calbirated version more to my taste. But I'm also "impaired" in an annoying way, since I play the piano myself: That is when music producers not only put the instrument off-place, but mike it to audience mode; in so far that the bass notes on the left side of the keyboard tend do wander to the right speaker, and vice versa. They are correct to do this, but I don't like it. I like to hear the notes in "keyboard view" with bass notes to the left-ish and treble notes to the right-ish. With headphones, I sometimes switch channels R/L. /Fanny X.
I think it was well explained here (by Fly) in this blog a few days ago. The "special editions" remove the piano from the stage and place it in the perspective of the pianist, right? I also prefer it this way, the "special editions". I admit that others prefer otherwise. The question is whether the Fly is available to please everyone. For me everything is fine as well. I love this blog and I wouldn't lose it.
