Viviana Sofronitsky
(Pianist)

Russian-Canadian pianist, was born in Moscow, to the family of the distinguished Russian pianist Vladimir Sofronitsky. She started her music study at the Central Music School and received a doctorate degree from Moscow Conservatory. In the Soviet Union she worked with both then-current early music ensembles, 'Madrigal' and 'The Chamber Music Academy', directed by Alexei Lubimov, while also touring as a solo artist in Moscow, Leningrad, Kiev, Minsk, Sverdlovsk, et al.

In 1989 she moved to the US where she worked at Oberlin College, Ohio. In 1990 she moved to Canada, where in Toronto she pursued an active career in performance and recording, partnered with various members of the “Tafelmusik” orchestra. She was a founder and first Artistic director of Academy Concert Series, Toronto.

Viviana Sofronitsky has been a Canadian citizen since 1994.

In 1999 she received historical performance degrees in harpsichord, fortepiano and early music teaching from the Royal Conservatory in The Hague.

Since 2001 she has lived in the Czech Republic, married to fortepiano builder Paul McNulty, performing and recording on his highly prized instruments an expanded repertoire from C.P.E. Bach to Liszt.

Viviana Sofronitsky was awarded the First Prize at the Bach Tage Berlin competition, as well as main prizes at the Musica Antiqua competition at the MAFestival, Brugge.

The main function of this blog is to share. The blog has no pretensions to musical analysis and much less to classify musicians. The blog publishes music composed for piano and only that. I will not discuss the qualities of pianistic Viviana Sofronitzki because it's secondary. In other words, the priority is to disclose the piano music of Franciszek Lessel, very little known. I know very little about the work of Viviana to have a real opinion about his pianistic abilities but at least she had the merit of recording Lessel.

A principal função deste blog é a partilha. O blog não tem pretenções de análise musical e muito menos de classificar músicos. O blog divulga música composta para piano e apenas isso. Não vou discutir as qualidades pianísticas da Viviana Sofronitzki, porque é secundário. Por outras palavras, é prioritário divulgar a música para piano de Franciszek Lessel, muito pouco divulgada. Eu conheço muito pouco do trabalho da Viviana para ter uma opinião real sobre as suas capacidades pianísticas mas pelo menos ela teve o mérito de gravar Lessel.

A little note: Viviana uses a pianoforte. This instrument has many limitations if we compare with the later and current piano. When you hear a musical work of this period it should be taken into account. The pianoforte is limited and has a sound less 'friendly' but this is how the piano music was heard...

Uma pequena observação: a Viviana usa um piano forte. Este instrumento tem muitas limitações se o compararmos com o posterior e actual piano. Quando se ouve uma obra musical deste período deverá ter-se isso em consideração. O piano forte é limitado e tem um som menos 'simpático' mas era assim que a música de piano era ouvida...

Never heard of this man Lessel. It's interesting to hear a 'new' composer. I also like fortepiano recordings.
